What Moves the Price of Four New Tires in San Antonio?

Why two quotes for four new tires can differ: size and load index, speed rating, tire category, brand tier, and what the installation line includes. No prices.

A set-of-four quote moves with the tire's size and load rating, its speed rating, the category it belongs to, the brand tier, and what the installation line bundles in. Two quotes only compare when those inputs match. Before you call anyone, copy the markings from your sidewall and decide what kind of driving the tires need to handle.

Read the sidewall before you ask for a number

The size code on the sidewall gives the tire's width, its sidewall height as a proportion of that width, and the wheel diameter it fits. Change any one of those and you are asking about a different tire, which can change the price of all four.

Right after the size you will usually find a two or three digit load index and a letter speed rating. The load index describes how much weight one tire is built to carry. The speed rating describes the top speed the tire is rated for. A tire with higher ratings can cost more to make, so a quote that drops either one is not the same product, even if the size matches.

Your door jamb placard and owner's manual show what the vehicle maker specified. If a shop suggests a different size or rating, ask why and what changes on the road.

Tire category matters as much as size

An all-season tire, an all-terrain tire and a highway touring tire for a truck are built for different jobs, and their quotes will differ for that reason. On a pickup or SUV, the choice between a road-focused all-season and an all-terrain tire is often the single biggest swing in a set-of-four total.

Decide honestly where the vehicle spends its time. Mostly pavement and commuting points one way. Gravel, towing or work sites point another. Tell the person quoting you, because the category you name sets which tires get priced. If you are unsure, say so and ask what trade-offs each category brings, such as road noise, tread wear and grip on loose surfaces.

Brand tier shifts the quote without changing the size

Tire makers tend to sell several lines at different positions: a premium line, a mid-range line and a budget line. Same size, same category, different tier, different total. The tiers can differ in tread design, rubber compounds and what the maker says about expected tread life.

Ask each shop to name the exact brand and model in the quote, not just a category. "All-season, installed" can describe very different tires. If a tire you have read about is not on the quote, ask whether it can be quoted for your size and how it compares with what was offered.

What the installed total may or may not include

A quote that says installed can bundle several things, or only some of them. Ask for the line items:

  • Mounting the tires on your wheels
  • Balancing each wheel
  • New valve stems or a service kit for the tire pressure sensors
  • Disposal of the old tires
  • Any shop fees, taxes or environmental charges
  • Any protection plan or road hazard coverage, and what it covers
  • Whether an alignment check is recommended, and why

A lower quote that leaves out balancing or disposal may not end up lower. Read your own policy and plan terms before assuming an add-on is or is not covered by something you already hold. The tire installation page and the TPMS service page show how the site describes those line items, though a page is not a confirmed quote for your vehicle.

How to get two quotes that actually compare

Give both shops the same information, in the same words:

  1. Year, make, model and trim of the vehicle
  2. The full size code, load index and speed rating from the sidewall
  3. The category you want, such as all-season or all-terrain
  4. The brand and model, or the tier you want to stay within
  5. Whether you want all four replaced or are weighing a smaller number
  6. Whether the quote should be the total with everything included

Then ask each shop to write back the brand, model, size, ratings and each included item. Put the two side by side. Differences in the tire itself and differences in the bundle are now visible, and you can decide which one you are paying for.

A San Antonio quote from 210 Tire Shop

210 Tire Shop is based in San Antonio, TX, so a San Antonio driver is dealing with a shop in the same city rather than one a town away. The site's listed service areas include Schertz, Cibolo, Boerne, New Braunfels and Seguin, along with other nearby towns. A listed area is not a promise of any particular fitting arrangement or visit, so if you live in one of those places, ask where the tires would be fitted and whether that works for you.

When you contact the shop, bring the sidewall markings and the checklist above. Ask whether your size, load index and speed rating can be quoted in the category you want, which brands and models are in play, and whether the quote is for a set of four with the line items written out. The site also has a new tires page and a truck tires page that show how the shop describes its tire offerings. Treat those as starting points for your questions, and confirm availability for your own vehicle directly.
